What kid wouldn’t want to make it into the Guinness Book of World Records? An event at Lansdowne Park on Sunday has a good shot at giving bragging rights to thousands of Ottawa kids and their parents — plus it’s a chance to play in the snow for a good cause. Cracking up the Capital, a comedy festival that raises money for mental health agencies, is sponsoring an attempt to beat the world record for most snowmen built in one hour.

The record is a measly 1,279 snowmen, built by 350 souls in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 2011. More than 450 people have already signed up locally to take their shot at breaking the record. It’s free, but donations are welcome, and go to agencies such as the Amethyst Women’s Addiction Centre, Do it for Daron, and the Dave Smith Youth Treatment Centre. Rick Mercer will be taping a segment of his show at the event. Any “gently used” hats, scarves and mittens participants bring to decorate the snowmen will be donated to the Salvation Army.

Participants in the snowman challenge also get a chance to buy 2-for-1 tickets to the festival’s gala hosted by Mary Walsh on Feb. 7 at TD Place. The festival runs Feb. 1-7.
