A fast-moving, low-pressure system is expected to hit the capital today, bringing with it anywhere from 10 to 15 centimetres of snow.

Environment Canada says the snow will start in the late morning or early afternoon. The weather agency expects around two centimetres to drop during the day. You can also expect a high of -6 C.

By this evening, anywhere from five to 10 centimetres is predicted to fall. Also, expect a low of -8 C.

The sudden snowfall will likely deteriorate road conditions, Environment Canada warned in a special weather statement.

“Motorists should expect to deal with poor winter driving conditions as untreated roads will become snow covered and slippery. Low visibility in snow and occasional blowing snow may also contribute to the poor winter driving conditions,” the weather agency said. “The snow from this (storm) will likely have considerable impact on the afternoon and early evening commute home from work.”

Forecast for the rest of the week:

Friday: Expect the snowfall to end at some point in the morning. After that, Environment Canada says there is a 60 per cent chance of flurries. The weather should clear by the late afternoon. Expect temperatures to hover around -13 C throughout the day.

Saturday: The storm is done, and the cold returns. A mix of sun and cloud with a high of -14 C and a low of -23 C.

Sunday: The weather agency predicts it will be a beautiful day for you to freeze. Expect sunshine all day. Also expect a high of -16 C and a low of -20 C.
