Ottawa fire crews were battling a two-alarm fire that had fully engulfed an apartment in a Little Italy highrise building Friday evening, officials said.
At just before 5 p.m., Ottawa Fire Services says it received two calls for a fire at 360 Bell St. South: One from the building alarm company, and one from a 911 caller saying there was smoke coming from the 11th floor.
Crews reported seeing smoke coming from the back of the building upon arrival. Officials said that when firefighters got to the floor, they reported that the fire in the apartment was “fully involved.”
Although police said there were no reported injuries, fire officials said that paramedics were tending to “patient care” and that it was “unknown” how many patients there were.
Occupants of the 11th floor have been evacuated and will be kept warm in an OC Transpo bus, fire officials said.
Ottawa fire said the Salvation Army and Red Cross had been notified of the fire since some of the building’s residents are expected to be displaced. Hydro Ottawa and Enbridge were also on the scene.
Police have closed Bell Street South between Carling Avenue and Plymouth Street until further notice.
By 5:45 p.m., the fire was under control, officials said. The cause and cost in damage are not yet known.
