An Ottawa woman has been fined and sentenced to house arrest after admitting to tax fraud.

Cemila Smikle-Kuznetov pleaded guilty in court August to one count of making false statements on the income tax returns of individuals to obtain or claim unwarranted tax credits. On Friday, she was sentenced in the Ontario Court of Justice to 3o days of house arrest and fined $47,789.

The fine represents 100 per cent of the unwarranted refunds she claimed, the Canada Revenue Agency said Monday in a news release.

According to the CRA, an investigation showed that for tax years from 2005 and 2008 Smikle-Kuznetzov used different aliases and impersonating her sister in preparing and filing Canada Child Tax Benefit applications and personal income tax returns in order to receive benefits and credits for fictitious children.

Smikle-Kuznetzov fabricated and submitted false documents, such as birth registry papers, to support her fraudulent application for child tax benefits and the Universal Child Care Benefit for twins and triplets that did not exist.

She unlawfully claimed $47,789 in various child-related tax benefits and GST credits, the agency said, citing court records.

Child and family benefits are monthly payments made to eligible families to help them with the cost of raising their children under the age of 18.
