来加超过一年的朋友们，你们觉得自己的英语(特别是口语)过关了吗？

nothing is useful but talk.

And for the people with strong accent(specially somebody I
have difficulty even in understanding his chinese), suggest
to take some accent course. It is very important.

Don't be afraid , just talk with local people as much as you
can.

And watch tv, like soap opera, news. You will learn about
what topic they are interested and what kind of words they
use in normal life.

Avoid using choppy words and phrase, such as " you needn't.."
. It is correct in chinese high school english, but here, no
one use it, you will feel more comfortable when talking "you
don't need...".

Try to catch up whatever they say, like in the elevator, walking...
Especially when their talking is not very clear, and fast, that's
the time for you to learn how they pronouce the short sentences and
words normally.

Find some local friends, that will be definitely helpful.

我以为语言是以能沟通理解为目的，大可不必为你的英文而脸红，比如说，看完录相要倒带，如果你不知道怎么说倒带的话也可以用“嘎叽”来代替，“what are you doing?""i ..i...i........嘎叽。。。。。the tape”

Do you know where I can take accent change course. Specially for immigrant. I took idiom and accent change courses in Toronto at night. It was extremely helpful to impove my English.

今天早上有点忙，来晚了。看到已经有不少跟贴了。看来语言问题是
我们新移民共同的痛啊。
谢谢大家的建议。道理呢也懂得，可是做起来就难了。有时候说着说
着忽然觉得自己说得可真够差劲的，就很灰心。另外我觉得人的惰性
也是学语言的大敌。中文已经深入我们的骨髓，那么自然纯熟。看中文
书和报纸就是觉得比较养眼，有阅读的愉悦感，看中文电视(粤语除外)
就是更能体会其微妙有趣之出，用中文聊天才能感受到随心所欲地驾驭语言
表达自己的乐趣。很多时候都不愿意勉强自己，回避困难，选择自己
熟悉擅长的方式去做事情。所以，我觉得学语言需要压力，最好是客观
环境的压力，逼得你非学不可，才能有进步。象我刚来的时候，人生地疏
的，被逼得四处去打听收集信息，找工作，写简历，去面试，觉得英文
是有些长进，时间长些了呢，环境也比较熟了，也认识几个朋友了，工作
中的一摊事也熟了，倒觉得自己的学习劲头和勇气没那么大了，在慢慢地
向中文世界里缩了。我现在正想着怎么给自己加些压力，比如读书。真在读书
的朋友们，你们是不是觉得自己的英文进步很大？
说到聊天，不知大家和外国人聊天有没有鸡同鸭讲，格格不入的感觉？我们
对他们这个社会的政治，历史，文化各方面背景知识的缺乏，真不是一时半
会能补上的。一次一个同事问我知不知道一个叫Niavana(大概是这么拼)的乐
队，我说从来没听说过，他一脸不能置信的表情，我心里说你还不知道小
虎队，beyond什么的呢。再比如前一段，同事们兴致勃勃地组织了一个
hockey pool,他们为了人多热闹，把我的名字也加上了，一个同事还拿着
报纸的体育版给我讲了半天怎么看积分什么的，我还是不懂，也不能感染
他们的兴致，随便瞎选了几个球队，输了掏钱好了。
唉！总之一个字，难哪！让我们大家共勉吧。也希望时间长了，一切都会
好些。
