Wi-Fi coming to OC Transpo
Posted on 2/5/2015 10:42:00 AM by Alison Sandor
It won't be a Canadian first, but the days are soon coming where commuters in Ottawa will be able to save their data plans and use free wireless Internet on OC Transpo.
Thirty-seven new state-of-the-art double decker buses purchased by the city have Wi-Fi capability. Fifteen of those buses will be hitting Ottawa's streets this year.
Transit Commission Chair Stephen Blais said it's a matter of getting the service linked up.
"My hope is that we can reach out to the provider that's offering the service in our rec centres and get something done so that as those buses roll out that service is available," said Blais.
Blais said right now there is no plan to retrofit older buses to add Wi-Fi.
"Given a choice of spending on retrofitted buses for Wi-Fi or spending on increasing service and reliability for residents, I think we'll always make the choice to invest in improving service and reliability of the system."
The STO service in Gatineau is also experimenting with Wi-Fi.
The new buses will also have security cameras and automated passenger counters.
