Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson wasted no time keeping his line of communication open with the federal minister responsible for the National Capital Commission.

Watson said Monday evening that he emailed Pierre Poilievre as soon as he heard that Prime Minister Stephen Harper had named the 35-year-old Nepean-Carleton MP employment minister and given him oversight of the NCC.

Poilievre, who becomes the senior political minister for the national capital region after John Baird quit last week, responded five minutes later according to Watson, and they spoke at 4 p.m.

The mayor said they plan to get together later this week.

Watson said he outlined his priority issues, such as LRT, the Ottawa River Action Plan, and cost-sharing on security for the capital.

“I have a good relationship with Pierre,” said Watson, who added that Poilievre does a good impression of the mayor. “We need to improve overall communications so we’re not surprising one another, from everything from renaming parkways to the RFP process to the surprise meeting at the NCC that shut down our western LRT. It was a good chat.

“I think a lot of people would say he’s energetic in the House of Commons, but I’ve had nothing but positive relations with him,” Watson added.
