A brother and sister were rescued by firefighters from a burning apartment in Gatineau early Sunday morning thanks to alert neighbours, officials said.

Flames and smoke were visible from the windows of Apartment A at 75 Marengere Rd., a four-apartment, two-storey building, when firefighters arrived at about 12:30 a.m.

Most of the residents had evacuated and quickly warned firefighters others might still be in the second-floor apartment where the fire was centred.

Firefighters immediately searched the apartment where they found the two siblings, aged 12 and 13, who required resuscitation. Both were transferred to a Gatineau hospital. One was subsequently sent to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario in Ottawa.

Firefighters believed another person had been in the apartment with the teens but could not immediately confirm if that was a parent or older teen.

The siblings remained in hospital at 6:30 a.m. Sunday morning, though their conditions were not known.

Other residents were able to return to their apartments Sunday morning as damage was contained to the source apartment.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Damage has yet to be assessed.
