Two veteran Citizen photographers, Wayne Cuddington and Jean Levac, are finalists in the News Photographers Association of Canada’s eighth National Pictures of the Year awards.
Chief photographer Cuddington is a finalist in two categories.
In the spot news category, his picture of bystanders coming to the aid of fallen soldier Cpl. Nathan Cirillo on Oct. 22 was selected as one of the best of the year.
Others in the spot news category were Cole Burston and John Lehmann, of the Globe and Mail, Jennifer Gautier, of Metro newspapers, and Jenna Hauck, of the Chilliwack Progress.

Cuddington is also a finalist in the Sports Feature category for his amusing photo of the Redblacks team photo shoot, capturing linebacker James Green brushing his flowing hair in preparation. Also in contention for spots features are Bernard Brault of La Presse, Ed Kaiser, of the Edmonton Journal, Vaughn Ridley of Getty Images and Derek Ruttan of the London Free Press.

Jean Levac was nominated for his dramatic photo of Jonathan Toews scoring a wraparound goal against Finland during the Sochi Games. Other finalists are Mathieu Bélanger, Mark Blinch, of Reuters, Nathan Denette, of The Canadian Press and Larry Wong of the Edmonton Journal.

More than 2,000 images from across Canada were entered in the competition’s 14 categories.
Winners of the awards, including Canadian Photojournalist of the Year and Canadian Photograph of the Year, will be announced at a gala event in Vancouver on May 9.
NPAC is a volunteer-run, non-profit association comprised of professional and student photojournalists in Canada. NPAC champions quality and ethical photography in journalism.
