The warning signals at a level train crossing are out of control Ottawa’s west end, this time on Moodie Drive near Fallowfield Road .

Ottawa city officials sent out an announcement that motorists should avoid the area. The cause is unknown and they can’t tell how long the problem will last.

The problem was first noted shortly after 10 a.m.

Courier Matt McMahon called the Citizen after he got stuck in traffic there Wednesday morning. The lights that warn of an approaching train are staying on even though there is no train, he said.

As well, the barrier is staying down for several minutes at a time, then lifting for about 30 seconds, then coming down again. Lights are staying on even when the barrier lifts to let cars through, he said.

McMahon said there’s a line of cars caught waiting for the barrier to lift, and some drivers have driven around it without waiting.

Several west-end Via Rail crossings have had problems with signals not working properly in the past two years.
