An Arnprior man has been fined $1,100 after pleading guilty to killing a Canada goose by shooting it with a rifle from inside his car.
Jean-Claude Richard faced charges including unlawfully discharging a firearm from a vehicle and hunting small game without a license under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act.
He also faced an extra $100 fine for hunting a migratory bird without a permit under the Migratory Birds Convention Act.
“The Act gives the federal government the responsibility to establish hunting seasons and Canada Geese are greatly appreciated by migratory game-bird hunters across the country,” according to Environment Canada. “More than 500,000 Canada Geese are taken in Canada each year by hunters.”
The Ontario Court of Justice heard that in 2013, Richard stopped and fired a rifle from inside his car while driving on Mohr’s Road in Fitzroy Township, killing a Canada goose.
A conservation officer investigated the incident after reading it in a public complaint.
Richard is banned from hunting in Ontario for one year.
The ministry reminds hunters that it is illegal to possess a loaded firearm in or on an aircraft, vehicle or motorboat. It is also illegal to shoot from, down or across a road.
