The federal government has announced it will contribute almost $2 million to l’Assemblée de la francophonie de l’Ontario (AFO) and La Cité collégiale to support internship programs for young francophones throughout Southern Ontario.

“The funding we are announcing today for l’AFO and La Cité will help Francophone and bilingual organizations across southern Ontario to access youth interns, business management training and applied research services,” Ottawa-Orléans Tory MP Royal Galipeau said in a news release.

Lise Bourgeois, president of Ottawa’s La Cité, Ontario’s oldest francophone college, said the funding will provide online training modules and research services for francophone businesses, to be provided by students.

La Cité and l’AFO said the projects are expected to create 36 permanent jobs and 60 temporary full-time jobs.

Ontario is now home to over 600,000 Franco-Ontarians. The francophone population increased almost 50 per cent between 1950 and 2006, according to FedDev Ontario.
