A man accused in the killings of two women pleaded guilty Monday to breaking into a college student’s apartment and violently sexually assaulting her at knifepoint.

Marc Leduc pleaded guilty to aggravated sexual assault, choking, break and enter and breach of probation for the Nov. 1, 2012 attack on the 19-year-old woman.

It was following the sex attack that Leduc, 58, was charged in February 2013 with first degree murder in the 2011 slaying of Leanne Lawson and the 2008 slaying of Pamela Kosmack.

It’s alleged DNA recovered from the sexual assault was used to link him to the homicide investigations.

The 19-year-old woman had been lying in bed when she was startled by the sound of Leduc’s heavy breathing shortly before 10 a.m.

Leduc pulled out a knife and told her to take off her clothes or he’d cut her. She complied, but only after pleading with him to leave her be. He put the folding knife to the back of her neck as he forced her to perform a sex act.

But when Leduc moved the knife from the back of her neck, the woman fought back, grabbing the blade and badly cutting her hands before Leduc again gained the upper hand.

He ordered the bleeding woman to the bed and tried to rape her, but put the knife down during the attempt.

This time the woman grabbed the knife. The two struggled, rolling off the bed onto the floor.

Leduc put her in a choke hold; she stabbed him in the thigh, groin and back.

Leduc tightened his grip. Struggling to breathe and feeling ready to pass out, the woman played dead. When Leduc lightened his grip, she fought back a third time, this time stabbing him in the head.

She eventually stood up and was able to break free. She dropped the knife and ran down the stairs.

“I was scared for my life,” she told a judge Monday. “I thought I was going to die right there, naked and covered in blood.”

Wearing nothing more than a coat she grabbed from a closet, she ran to a neighbour’s apartment.

Police later found Leduc curled up in the fetal position behind a wooden dresser bleeding from his wounds. He was taken to hospital and later told police it was all a blur. He had used $200 to $300 worth of crack between drinks of vodka, Sourpuss liqueur and beer.

During her victim impact statement, the woman described how the safety and security of her home had been taken from her. The scars on her hands are a constant reminder of what happened to her.

Crown prosecutor James Cavanagh praised the victim for her “courage and presence of mind” during the harrowing attack.

“These facts display the tremendous bravery and determination she displayed throughout the ordeal,” said Cavanagh.

Cavanagh said the Crown intends to seek permission to begin dangerous offender proceedings against Leduc, although that may hinge on the outcome of his first-degree murder trial in 2016.
