Charles H. Hulse Public School will be closed for another day after school staff reported smelling pesticide in the school Monday.

The board ordered the Alta Vista Drive building closed Friday and over the weekend after concerns were raised about an odour in the school resulting from the earlier use of a pesticide to get ride of cockroaches.

School officials had noted last week an increase in the number of parents calling to say their children were showing signs of illness, including flu-like symptoms, headaches, upset stomach and itching eyes and ears. About 30 children were absent Thursday.

OCDSB spokeswoman Norah Marsh says Ottawa Public Health officials spent the weekend trying to eliminate the pesticide. “On the weekend it felt that there was no odour apparent,” she said.

Marsh says staff noticed the smell of the pesticide had returned while cleaning classrooms Monday.

Ottawa Public Health officials have returned to the school to investigate. Marsh says the OCDSB did not approve of the use the insecticide that has led to the school’s closure.

“We are doing a full investigation of how that occurred,” she says.

Ottawa Public Health has been monitoring students and staff who have showed symptoms after exposure to the pesticide. Marsh says Ottawa Public Health is asking anyone exposed to the pesticide who has flu-like symptoms to contact them.
