Ottawa police have laid child pornography charges against a West Carleton Secondary School staff member who was escorted out of the building Tuesday morning.

School’s principal Reg Lavergne sent a note to parents Wednesday explaining that a “non-teaching” employee had been placed on home assignment pending the outcome of a criminal investigation.

“As you can appreciate, this was very troubling to students and staff,” Lavergne said in the note. “Many students have asked questions and the school has very little information. The police investigation is ongoing and police have requested that any questions be directed to them.”

He implored parents and students to “refrain” from speculation in person or through the media and allow the police continue the investigation.

Police said the service’s Internet Child Exploitation Unit had received information from the RCMP that led to the execution on Tuesday of a search warrant at a home in west Ottawa. Computers were seized for forensic analyses.

David McCrindle, 38, of Ottawa has been charged with two counts of possessing and one of distributing of child pornography.
