Canterbury High School’s Kiera Sandrock placed second in the national Poetry in Voice competition in Montreal this week, winning $1,000 for herself and $500 for her school library to purchase poetry books.
Sandrock, 18, is in Grade 12 and was competing for the second time at Poetry in Voice. Founded in 2011 by philanthropist Scott Griffin, Poetry in Voice draws students from 400 schools across Canada who compete in a poetry recitation contest. Online entries were winnowed to 39 students, who were invited to the national finals in English, French and bilingual competitions.
Poetry in Voice seeks to rekindle interest in poetry recitation and introduce students to classic and contemporary Canadian poets. Griffin is also the founder of the $65,000 Griffin Trust for Excellence in Poetry.
Sandrock’ prize winning effort included three poems: Fire Watch by Ottawa native Ken Babstock, Preludes by T.S. Eliot and Amor Mundi by Christina Rossetti. Sandrock was the only Ottawa student in the finals.
Sandrock was supported by her English teacher, Deborah Ann James, and had been working on her presentation since before Christmas.
