One person is dead after fire crews fought a blaze early Wednesday morning in a smoke-filled apartment unit near Lincoln Fields Shopping Centre.
At 1:14 a.m., Ottawa fire received multiple calls reporting fire alarms going off in an apartment building at 1330 Richmond Road. One 911 caller said smoke was visible from the apartment’s fifth floor.
When crews arrived, they made their way to the fifth floor and forced entry into a single unit. Inside, they were confronted by flames and “heavy smoke conditions.”
The fire did not spread and was contained to the one unit.
By just before 2 a.m. firefighters had the blaze under control and other occupants of the building were allowed to return to their apartments.
Ottawa fire said a male was pronounced dead on scene.
The cause of the fire is unknown and Ottawa police are investigating.
