Ottawa city councillor David Chernushenko was honoured, during national mental health week, for being a staunch supporter of Ottawa Salus, a charitable organization that provides housing and support services for people living with severe and persistent mental illness.
He was given a special award by Salus executive director Lisa Ker during a benefit held Wednesday at Orange Art Gallery. Organizers were hoping to raise about $20,000 that night.

A crowd of 170 listened to Ker as she spoke about the fear and anger that can arise when the public learns an affordable housing provider is moving into its neighbourhood.
“For a lot of people that can be a very scary thing,” she acknowledged. “We know that, even if it does knock the wind out of our sails sometimes.”
Yet, for the past year, Chernushenko has been a strong ally as Salus has pushed ahead with plans to build a 42-unit apartment building on Clementine Boulevard, in Heron Park. Architectural drawings for the new building were on display at the fundraiser.

Chernushenko has more than walked the talk. “He ran a marathon for us,” added Ker.
The councillor took the time to patiently and thoroughly respond to complaints from the public. The cynics, believing Chernushenko’s actions to be purely political, grumbled that he would never move next door to the mentally ill. Chernushenko informed them he didn’t have to move; he already lives around the corner from a Salus group home.

On hand for the fundraiser, which got support from Three Dog Winery and Kichesippi Beer, were Rideau-Rockcliffe Coun. Tobi Nussbaum, Salus board president Dwayne Wright and gallery owner Ingrid Hollander, who offered to donate 20 per cent of all artworks sold that night to the cause.

Also present were MC Derick Fage and Essence Catering chef and owner Jason Laurin. He not only provided the food for the benefit but also donated to the live auction a dinner for 10. It sold for an impressive $3,000 following a brief but intense bidding war won by Jacques Emond, a senior partner at Emond Harnden LLP, and Laraine Kaminsky, president of Global LK.
