The return of students to Charles H. Hulse Public School, after they were forced out by concerns about pesticides used there, has been delayed again.
The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board announced Friday that students are now expected to return to the school on May 25.
The school has been closed since April 16, when a number of students started experiencing flu-like symptoms and itching eyes and ears after the building was sprayed with two pesticides to combat cockroaches. Since April 22, classes have been taking place at Parkwood Hills Public School.
Last week, the board announced it hoped classes would resume sometime between May 11 and May 19.
Friday’s announcement stated the ventilation process, cleaning and construction have taken longer than anticipated, delaying the date of staff and students’ return.
Along with cleaning the entire school, the daycare and two bathrooms inside have been largely reconstructed after remnants of Gardex and Konk 400, the two pesticides used, were found under sinks and floor tiles. The later return date is meant to allow for odours of paint, floor wax, new carpet and more to dissipate.
