A picture by the Citizen’s Wayne Cuddington showing the frantic efforts to save the life of Cpl. Nathan Cirillo at the National War Memorial has been chosen as the top spot-news photo of the year by Canadian photojournalists.

Cuddington’s photo was honoured in Vancouver over the weekend at the News Photographers Association of Canada annual Picture of the Year gala.

Cuddington was driving on Wellington Street on Oct. 22, 2014, when he saw police and emergency vehicles racing toward Parliament Hill and the National War Memorial. He followed and stopped at the scene, where bystanders were trying to resuscitate Cirillo after he had been shot while on ceremonial guard duty.

Also over the weekend, the Citizen’s Jean Levac received an honourable mention in Sports Action photography for his picture of Team Canada’s Jonathan Toews trying to score a wraparound goal against Finland at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

Cuddington’s and Levac’s photos were among nearly 2,000 submitted to the competition to be judged by a panel of experts.
