Paramedics are crediting two passersby with saving the life of a 63-year-old after the man tumbled over a barrier and into the Rideau Canal along Colonel By Drive on Tuesday morning.

While paramedics don’t know exactly where the man went into the river, they said it was south of Dow’s Lake along Colonel By.

The man lost control of his bike and fell into the river, with his feet still attached to the pedals. Unable to detach his specialized shoes from the bicycle pedal slips, the man was being dragged slowly under the water.

That’s when two joggers who had been passing jumped into the canal to save him.

“Paramedics credit the two rescuers for saving the man’s life,” the Ottawa Paramedic Service said in a news release.

The stretch of bicycle pathway south of Dow’s Lake near Carleton University has been the subject of controversy in recent months after a man lost control of his bicycle and tumbled headfirst into the canal in April. That fall took place along part of the pathway that runs under Heron Road, where there is only a short cement curb in place to safeguard cyclists from falling into the waterway. It left that victim with severe head trauma as the canal was empty at the time, leaving nothing but rocks and ice to break his fall.

In the days after that incident the Citizen was contacted by several others who said they or someone they knew had fallen over the short curb on the same stretch of the path and into the river. Many called on the National Capital Commission to erect a barrier to prevent similar incidents.

More to come.
