A 48-year-old deer hunter was badly hurt Tuesday morning when he tumbled at least 10 metres — while holding his gun — from a tree stand in the bush about 50 km west of Renfrew.
Members of his hunting party of about a dozen, who had been out on Crown land near Griffith, had to drive about 15 kilometres to the main road just to get cellphone service to call for help.
They met first responders at the road. Paramedics got the man, who had serious chest and back injuries and mild hypothermia, aboard an all-terrain vehicle that accommodates a stretcher and ferried him to an Ornge helicopter to kilometres away for the trip to the trauma centre in Ottawa. They also started an IV and painkillers.
County of Renfrew paramedics rescued a 48-year-old man who was badly hurt when he plunged from a tree stand while hunting.
“As tragic as it is, all the pieces fit into place exactly the way they should,” said chief Michael Nolan of the County of Renfrew Paramedic Service, which rallied resources including its remote access and treatment team.
It was only a week ago that Nolan posted hunting season safety tips, among them making sure tree stands are safe and stable before climbing aboard.
He warned hunters to drink responsibly — noting alcohol can have disastrous consequences when mixed with ATVs, firearms, and tree stands — and to know where they are in case they have to call 911.
