Young Aboriginals are nine times as likely to be depressed, twice as likely to abuse drugs or alcohol and three times as likely to think about suicide compared to non-Aboriginal youth, according to a report released Friday by the Wabano Centre for Aboriginal Health.

The disturbing findings in the My Life, My Wellbeing report come from nearly three years of research into the lives of young Aboriginals in Champlain Local Health Integration Network. The study sought to understand the scope of mental health and addiction issues, the availability of services and “the meanings of culturally safe programs for services for Aboriginal youth and families.”

The report was to be released Friday morning at Ottawa’s Wabano Centre, which took the lead on the study sponsored by the Champlain LHIN.

More than 300 First Nation, Inuit and Métis youth took part in the study.
