Ottawa police say the problem of tow trucks chasing collisions has reached “epidemic proportions” after an officer charged multiple drivers at the scene of a traffic collision on Tuesday morning.
Six tow truck drivers were charged for congesting the scene of a collision at Kirkwood and Coldrey avenues in order to solicit business.
The drivers face fines under the city’s towing bylaw of $175 for being within 100 metres of a collision scene. A seventh driver was given a warning.
It is illegal for a tow-truck driver to approach a motorist at a collision unless called in by the motorist or the police.
“The problem of collision chasing by tow trucks has reached epidemic proportions in Ottawa,” said Sgt. John Kiss, supervisor of the Ottawa Police Service’s impounded vehicles section. “Not only are tow truck drivers breaking the law by approaching collision scenes, they can also cause further danger at what is already a hazardous situation.
“It has been our experience that some Ottawa tow truck drivers have fraudulently claimed that the police have sent them to the scene, and they have often convinced unsuspecting motorists that their otherwise driveable cars must be towed.”
Last fall, Ottawa police staged several fake car accidents in a sting to ticket tow truck drivers. Police had hoped the sting would drive the point home.
Police are urge motorists to not accept services from a tow truck that has arrived on the scene unsolicited but rather to seek assistance and instructions from their insurance company.
