Here’s a guide to three great smaller festivals in the ottawa area this summer. They’re free, too.

Ottawa Lumière Festival

When & where: Aug. 15, New Edinburgh Park along Stanley Avenue

Highlights: It’s not hyperbole to call this event magical. As dusk falls, follow the flickering lights from dozens of fanciful, handmade lanterns set among the trees along the Ottawa River. You’ll encounter any manner of people in outrageous costumes, from tiny girls floating by in fairy wings to stilt walkers on steroids and buskers playing with glowsticks. The park traditionally has a maze composed of lanterns in paper bags, as well as musical entertainment.

Good to know: Wear a costume, bring a glowstick or a flashlight. You can also take part in workshops before the event to learn to make your own lantern.

Lovely Stewart Park has lots of grass, trees, and room to move, and the festival’s free.

Stewart Park Festival

When & where: July 17 to 19, Perth

Highlights: This relaxed festival offers fine music in a large small-town park, with grass, big trees, and room to move. There’s also a small craft and food fair, and activities for kids during the day such as arts and crafts and children’s entertainers. Bands booked for the stage so far: Kelly Prescott, gypsykumbiaorchestra, Dave Gunning, Catherine MacLellan, Maneli Jamal, Matthew Byrne, The Boxcar Boys, Al Simmons, Sweet Alibi, My Son The Hurricane, Quique Escamilla Band, Sam Martin & Delta Sugar, The Ballagh Bunch.

Good to know: The Tay River runs through it, so you can go for a dip, or bring an inner tube for a raft ride. Arrive early and tour through quaint historic downtown Perth. And while the festival is free, consider giving them a donation online to help ensure the music keeps going.

Ottawa’s Dragon Boat Festival is one of the largest in North America.

Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival

When & where: June 25-28, Mooney’s Bay

Highlights: It’s a chance to watch one of North America’s largest dragon-boat racing events. But it’s also worth going just for the music. Highlights this year: Tokyo Police Club; Hey Rosetta!; Dan Mangan + Blacksmith; Rural Alberta Advantage; Yukon Blonde; Mounties; Hollerado; Jeremy Fisher; Craig Cardiff; Jim Bryson; Kalle Mattson; The Acorn; The Franklin Electric. And it’s free.

Good to know: You can jump in the river for a swim at Mooney’s Bay Beach to cool off if the weather’s steamy. This festival is not exactly tiny — it attracts more people every year — but the crowds aren’t overwhelming, especially during the day. If you go with children, there are many kid-oriented activities from a bouncy castle to Little Ray’s Reptiles if they get bored watching the boats or listening to music. There’s also a playground at Mooney’s Bay.
