Audi’s Head of IT Wins European Award
by Audi AG on 5 June 2015 in Audi News
Audi is driving in the digital fast lane. The European business network CIONET has chosen Mattias Ulbrich, Head of IT and Organization at AUDI AG, as the “European Chief Information Officer of the Year.” This Thursday, the 48-year-old received the award during the CIO CITY conference in Brussels in front of 170 IT executives from international companies.
The European business network CIONET comprises more than 5,100 IT executives from 18 countries and promotes dialog between IT specialists of various disciplines. The award “European CIO of the Year” has been given annually since 2011 in recognition of European IT visionaries from large corporations, small and medium‑sized enterprises and the public sector. The 12‑member jury is composed of IT experts from the fields of business, science and politics, and primarily assesses the contribution made by IT to a company’s increased competitiveness. With their innovative IT strategy, Mattias Ulbrich and his team succeeded against finalists from six countries.
“In the digital era, interdisciplinary collaboration is the key to success. The best ideas for the active shaping of rapid transformation are created in a team,” stated Ulbrich. By means of intelligent IT solutions, he says that Audi has improved the processes of production, logistics and quality assurance for example, and has thus increased productivity while reducing costs. On the subjects of Audi connect, the connection of cars with their environment, and Audi City, the digital showroom of the future, the Audi IT team cooperates very closely with colleagues from the Technical Development and Sales divisions.
“What most impressed us was how successfully Mattias Ulbrich and his team have cooperated with all departments to convert the groundbreaking potential of digital technologies into a competitive advantage,” explained Dr. Nils Fonstad, jury member and scientist at the Sloan Center for Information Systems Research of the MIT. For example, Ulbrich and his staff successfully strengthened the brand’s digital image, improved its customers’ experience and created new revenue sources.
“IT specialists play a key role in the digital transformation of our society,” emphasized Indrajit Banerjee, Director of the Knowledge Society Division of UNESCO, in his speech at the award ceremony.
Audi’s IT department employs more than 1,000 people and supports well over 1,500 individual departments within AUDI AG. It also supports the 100‑percent subsidiaries of the Audi Group, Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A. and Ducati Motor S.p.A., with key IT issues. The same applies to over 20 other subsidiaries in Germany and abroad as well as the worldwide sales companies.
The company is regarded as an attractive employer for IT specialists and will this year recruit numerous experts, in the area of Audi connect for example. In a recent survey of university graduates carried out by Universum, the brand with the Four Rings took fourth place as the best automobile manufacturer, directly after Google, Microsoft and Apple.

Audi CEO Stadler focuses on SUVs, sees no need for minivan

Stadler: "SUVs have a higher conquest rate than minivans."

Automotive News Europe
June 5, 2015 06:01 CET
Audi started the biggest investment program in its history last year as part of its effort to overtake BMW as the world’s largest premium automaker by 2020. The Volkswagen Group subsidiary will spend 24 billion euros over the next five years to add new products, lightweight technologies, alternative drivetrains and improve connectivity. Audi CEO Rupert Stadler is particularly bullish about the automaker’s fast-growing SUV lineup. He explained why in an interview with Automotive News Europe Editor Luca Ciferri.
Audi will have 60 models or variants by 2020, up from 50 now. Which body style will grow the fastest?
Globally, we will respond proactively to the growing number of customers who enjoy SUVs’ higher driving position and their sense of enhanced safety. We already decided to go smaller with the Q1 and to go bigger with the Q8. Regardless of the size of the SUV, we strive to be the most sought after model in the segment. For example, the transaction price for a Q7 is very similar to our A8 because our SUVs are not utilitarian off-roaders, they are true premium vehicles, particularly in terms of interior fit and finish.
Last year Audi showed the SUV-inspired TT concept. Is that your vision for a sporty compact SUV?
The feedback for that concept was very positive but no decision has been made on whether we will build something like that. If such a model gets the green light, to be at the top of its segment it would need to be underpinned by the next generation of the MQB architecture. That means it would not arrive until after 2020.
Audi has shown three different Prologue concept cars. What purpose do those cars fulfill?
They provide a glimpse of our future design direction so that we can get some customer feedback. The first Prologue concept, shown last year at the Los Angeles auto show, received really positive feedback. This was very important for us because we had faced some criticism about our design. With that concept we showed where we are headed.
Does the Prologue Avant concept shown at the 2015 Geneva auto show hint at the forthcoming A8 wagon?
This concept, with its strong sex appeal, also generated excellent feedback. For us, it confirmed that our future design direction is correct. Unfortunately, wagons are popular only in Europe, so we doubt there would be enough demand to justify building such a model.
Is the global acceptance of your Sportback models growing?
Definitely. They also enjoy high transaction prices. The A7 Sportback, which is based on the same architecture as the A5 and A6, has average transaction prices close to the A8.
Are more Sportback variants planned?
We don’t discuss future models, but I can say that we are working hard in this sector. Clearly, models with good margins have a better chance of getting production approval.
Does Audi need a large, four-seat coupe to fight the BMW 6 series?
Models like that add prestige and boost the brand image, but that segment is very small and getting smaller. If you are looking to boost your global volume, a large SUV like the forthcoming Q8 is more likely to be a winner than a large coupe.
Meet the boss
NAME: Rupert Stadler
TITLE: Audi CEO
AGE: 52
MAIN CHALLENGE: Expanding Audi's range by 10 models in the next 5 years to help it rise to No. 1 in premium vehicle sales.
Will Audi add a compact minivan?
Our competitors decided to launch compact MPVs. We decided on an SUV with the Q1 because SUVs have a higher conquest rate than minivans, even in the compact segments. Consumers are more likely to switch to an SUV and are more likely to pay a premium price because SUVs are considered more emotional. We would rather be the emotional choice than the rational choice. Our priority is to have the ability to win new consumers and then command a premium price.

Rupert Stadler Confirms No A8 Avant or Minivan, Chats about Other Models
by George Achorn on 5 June 2015 in Rumors, Renders & Spy Photos
Automotive News Europe recently caught up with Audi board chairman Rupert Stadler, and pointedly asked him about several upcoming models. The discussion proved enlightening, though more for ruling out rumored models than for confirming them.
Here’s a rundown.

TTQ crossover – Audi showed a TT SUV in concept form this year. Stadler says that it is still being considered but has not yet been approved. Given that, he says it would be based on the next-generation MQB architecture and as such wouldn’t show up before 2020. What goes unsaid is that Audi wants to grow the TT lineup and if the TTQ is still not confirmed, the TT Sportback is also still being considered.

Prologue concepts and an A8 Avant – The author of the Automotive News story asked if the Prologue Avant and/or allroad pointed toward an A8 Avant. Stadler suggested that Avants are more popular in Europe and less so in other markets. In as much, there’s not enough market for an A8 Avant. We’ve heard those Prologue Avant and allroad concepts are more of a hint at the A6 Avant family anyway, but this still confirms there are no current plans for an A8 Avant.

Sportback Models – When asked about Sportback models, Stadler pointed toward their overall success and that they sell at a premium. For example, transaction prices for A7 models are closer to that of an A8. Stadler refused to comment on plans for new models, but said that the higher profitability helps Sportbacks gain production approval. We’ve heard the next A5 Sportback may be coming to America and we also know that Audi is considering a TT Sportback. Time will tell.

Large Four-Seat Coupe – Asked about a large 2-door like the BMW 6 series, Stadler responded negatively. He sighted the small size of that segment of the market and the fact that it was shrinking. He also referenced that he thought investing in an SUV like the upcoming Q8 made more sense given where the market is going.

Minivan – BMW has launched an MPV, so Stadler was asked if there was interest in such a car from Audi. Stadler suggested that SUV/crossover product is more an emotional choice and that Audi would be more of an emotional brand, thus investment in products like the upcoming Q1. In other words, there’s no plan for an Audi minivan.
