An Ottawa taxi driver has been suspended after being caught in a profane and racist rant while apparently refusing to move his cab for an ambulance outside the Rideau Centre Wednesday afternoon.
In a minute-long video uploaded to YouTube, the Capital Taxi driver can be seen shouting at least two dozen profanities at security guards, including a racial slur hurled at a black officer, while being calmly asked to move for an approaching ambulance.
Coventry Connections suspended the driver “immediately” and will investigate the incident to determine if further action will be required, according to the company’s chief executive.
Hanif Patni said he was “appalled” upon viewing the video.
“We don’t know what is going on with the driver, we don’t understand what stresses he’s under and what made him flip, but clearly this is not behaviour that is condoned by us,” Patni said.
Coventry Connections runs dispatch operations for Capital Taxi.
Patni said the company has also relayed information to the City of Ottawa bylaw office, which regulates the city’s taxi system.
“We will be giving the driver a fair hearing to understand what was going on, but after that we will be making some decisions about his future.”
Warning: video contains explicit language.
