Because of ongoing job action by teachers, several grades of students in the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board will not receive report cards at the end of this school year, the school board said in a release Friday afternoon.
Students from junior kindergarten to Grade 7 will instead get a “Letter of Promotion,” which will inform parents whether or not their child will be moving on to the next grade. The letters — to be sent the week of June 22 — will also have information on students’ absences from class.
“It’s incumbent upon us to provide information whether a child’s moving from one grade to the other,” said Barrhaven/Knoxdale-Merivale trustee Donna Blackburn.
But the school board confirmed Friday evening that some students will get report cards. Grade 8 students will receive cards with grades, and perhaps notes on work habits and learning skills, but no comments from teachers.
High school students, with a priority given to Grade 12 students who are graduating, will also receive report cards. Teachers, though, are refusing to enter any of grading data into computer systems, instead leaving that to principals, vice-principals and supervisors.
Students who have failed a course will be informed by June 26 to give them time to register in summer courses, which kick off July 2. High school students should receive their marks by July 13.
“We know this is disappointing and frustrating for parents and students,” said a letter to parents from Jennifer Adams, the director of education for the school board.
Adams was not made available for an interview Friday evening.
“It’s unfortunate that due to the labour relations that we don’t have the capacity to get every student a report card, but this is the best solution under a difficult situation,” said Rideau-Rockcliffe/Alta Vista trustee Chris Ellis.
The chair of the board of trustees, Shirley Steward, declined to comment and referred inquiries to the board’s media relations staff and Adams. Several other school board trustees also declined to comment.
A request for comment was made to the local teachers union, but it was not answered.
More to come.
