Summer arrives this weekend. Don’t go swimming at Lac Leamy to celebrate.

The beach is closed, says the National Capital Commission, which really means you can sit on the sand but don’t go in the water because it has too many bacteria.

The culprit is the usual fecal coliform group, which can cause stomach cramping and diarrhea. But the good news is that the swimming areas in Gatineau Park have all passed their water tests and are open for business.

The NCC says it will test the Lac Leamy water daily and expects to re-open the beach once bacteria levels drop.

Fecal coliform bacteria come from a variety of sources ranging from sewage to droppings of dogs and other animals. Levels in lakes and rivers often rise after rain.

City of Ottawa beaches will begin their season Saturday, with lifeguards on duty from noon to 7 p.m. daily. The city will be posting water quality online but hadn’t started as of Friday afternoon.
