Retired astronaut and International Space Station Commander Chris Hadfield briefed the media and greeted members of the famed Canadian Forces Snowbirds as they flew in to the Gatineau Airport in preparation for Tuesday’s airshow and Wednesday’s Canada Day performance.
Joining him for the briefing was special guest Maryse Carmichael, the first woman ever to fly with, and lead the Snowbirds, and now a pilot instructor with CAE. Michael Potter of Vintage Wings of Canada was also on hand with his Supermarine Spitfire Mark XVI.
The former commander of the International Space Station will be the guest of honour at the Wings Over Gatineau air show on Tuesday, where he will fly in formation with the Canadian Forces Snowbirds during part of their demonstration. Hadfield will be flying a 1950s-era jet fighter, an F-86 Sabre in the livery of the legendary RCAF Golden Hawks aerobatic display team that flew from 1959 to 1964.
The event, which runs from noon to 4 p.m. at the Gatineau airport, 1717 Arthur-Fecteau St., is hosted by Vintage Wings of Canada. Tickets at the gate are $10, but entry is free for members of the Canadian Aviation and Space Museum, members of Vintage Wings and for children aged 10 and under. Parking is free.
