Investigators have confirmed that a body found in the Rideau River Saturday was that of Muhab Sultanaly Sultan, wanted by police in London, Ont., in the shooting death of a teenager trying to retrieve a missing cellphone.
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit released the identity Tuesday morning while announcing that the unit is continuing to investigate the circumstances of Sultan’s death. Sultan is believed to have been the driver of a vehicle that was steered toward two Ottawa police bicycle officers during a June 24 traffic stop.
Police pursued the vehicle, which was abandoned in the Sandy Hill neighbourhood. A passenger was taken into custody but the driver escaped into a nearby wooded area.
Hours later, residents reported a suspicious man in the area. Police say the man entered the water and disappeared below the surface as officers approached.
