The residents of an apartment building where a woman fell four storeys early Sunday have been told to stay off their balconies until they can be inspected.
A 19-year-old woman who fell about 15 metres from her balcony at 2535 Othello Ave.around 3 a.m. was taken to hospital in critical condition. Police said Monday the woman’s condition had improved from critical to serious after she had surgery.
The woman was found at the bottom of a loading dock when paramedics arrived. She suffered from head and abdominal injuries and a fractured thigh bone.
Ottawa police continued to investigate the fall but said said they don’t currently suspect foul play.
Greg Martel, who lives in the same building, said he saw a notice at the apartment building that told residents to stay off their balconies until an engineer could inspect them.
The property management company was not immediately available for comment.
Bill Bourdeau has lived in the building for 15 years. Bourdeau said he finds it odd how the railing failed since it would be difficult for it to become unhinged.
“I’m surprised it happened,” Bourdeau said. “I didn’t see or hear anything the night before.”
