The father of a Thurso baby who died in what police are describing as a case of shaken baby syndrome will be charged with manslaughter.

The 25-year-old father was originally charged with aggravated assault after the six-week-old baby was found unconscious in a Thurso home on July 15. The child died in hospital two days later, according to the Sûreté du Quebec.

The father is scheduled to appear in Gatineau court Monday, where the aggravated assault charge will be upgraded to manslaughter. The father had originally been remanded to Monday for a bail hearing.

The court imposed a publication ban on the man’s name to protect the identity of the child.

The infant — a baby girl, according to an off-duty paramedic who lives next door and who helped treat the infant while still at the home — was taken to a hospital in Gatineau, and then transferred to Ottawa, where police said the baby was in critical condition before dying.

Police have laid a charge of aggravated assault against the 25-year-old father. The accused appeared in court Thursday afternoon and was remanded to July 20 for a bail hearing.

The investigation continues, and an autopsy is scheduled for this week.
