A graphic flyer attacking Liberal leader Justin Trudeau for his pro-choice stance on abortion has landed in the federal riding of Ottawa Centre, angering some residents who found the gruesome image in their mailboxes.
The flyers, which have previously been seen in part of Vancouver, Saskatoon and the Greater Toronto Area, are being distributed by anti-abortion advocacy activist groups Campaign Life Coalition and the Canadian Centre for Bio-Ethical Reform. They feature graphic images that appear to be aborted fetuses, alongside a large image of Trudeau and the caption “a vote for Justin Trudeau is a vote for this.”
Ottawa Centre Liberal candidate Catherine McKenna said constituents drew her attention to the flyers.
“They’re pretty shocking,” she said. “I have three kids and I would be pretty horrified if they were opening the mailbox to see the flyer.”
McKenna, who called the flyers “offensive, divisive politics,” said they were likely not created to foster discussion. “It’s just foisting really horrifying images, linking Justin Trudeau to these images. It’s just the political attacks that people are really tired of seeing.”
Ottawa resident Diane Germain agreed. The 68-year-old said she thought the campaign was “in poor taste” and that seeing the pamphlet in her mailbox made her “sick.”
“I just felt that it was distasteful,” Germain said, “and I don’t think they should have had his picture right there, where the (fetus) was at the front (of the flyer.) That was absolutely disgusting.”
The Campaign Life Coalition has two main offices: headquarters in Toronto and an Ottawa bureau. The Toronto office said no spokesperson was available for comment.
The Ottawa bureau said it was not involved in the distribution of the flyers.
“CLC Ottawa is not involved in the postcard distribution,” said Debbie Duval, the national capital organizer at CLC Ottawa. “This is a partnership between CCBR and CLC Youth out of Toronto.”
Phone calls and emails to the Canadian Centre for Bio-Ethical Reform for comment were not returned.
