The Library and Archives Canada building in Gatineau was evacuated early Friday afternoon after police reported discovering a suspicious package, which was later discovered to pose no danger.

The package was discovered outside the building, causing a full evacuation of the office building at approximately 12:12 p.m. According to Sgt. Mathieu Thibeault of the Gatineau police, the 10-storey office holds approximately 500 people on an average work day.

After deploying firefighters, paramedics and police officers to form a perimeter while the object was inspected, the perimeter was called off at approximately 3:30 p.m. after it was determined that the package was not a threat.

According to Gatineau police, the object resembled a GPS beacon, and they are “almost sure” it was related to geocaching, a hobby in which participants hide these beacons for other users to find using a GPS receiver.
