A 76-year-old woman is dead and her husband in serious condition in hospital following a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Lépine Avenue and Highway 50 in Gatineau Sunday evening.

According to Gatineau police Lieut. Jean-François Beauchamp, the couple in their car tried to turn off the highway onto Lépine where they were struck by an oncoming pickup truck driving west along the avenue.

Following the 6 p.m. accident, the woman was taken to Buckingham Hospital where she was pronounced dead. Her passenger husband, 72, was rushed to Gatineau Hospital where he was treated for serious but not life-threatening injuries. The 29-year-old pickup drive suffered minor injuries.

As of late Sunday evening, police continued to block off traffic in the area, including between Lépine Avenue and Carpentier Street while investigators remained at the scene. The eastside entrance to Highway 50 was also closed to traffic.

Beauchamp noted that alcohol was not involved in the accident. He said the couple were from Chénéville in the Lac-Simon area of the Outaouais north of Gatineau.
