Temperatures in Ottawa soared to a record-breaking 34 C on Wednesday afternoon, making this year’s July 29 the hottest one yet in our recorded history. The highest temperature ever measured before on this particular day was 33.3 C, and that was back in 1949 and 1959.
As predicted by Environment Canada meteorologist Geoff Coulson, Wednesday was expected to break heat records and also be the peak of a heat wave that has the city hiding out in air-conditioned rooms while consuming justifiably high amounts of ice cream.
According to Coulson, temperatures will start to cool down by the end of this week. While Environment Canada predicts a similarly hot day for Thursday, Friday is supposed to have a normal yearly-average high of 26 C and temperatures are supposed to remain reasonable heading into the long weekend.
