Canadian Tire Centre will host Marvel Universe Live, a theatrical performance starring 25 Marvel superheroes, including The Incredible Hulk, Spiderman and Hawkeye, over the holiday weekend from Friday to Sunday.

But in a Wednesday visit to sick children at CHEO, the performers in the act were not allowed to don their costumes due to copyright issues with Marvel Entertainment, which only allows them to wear costumes during the show. Instead, they showed up in shirts bearing the logo of the tour.

“That’s something that they are not allowed for trademark purposes,” said Chantal Charbonneau, director of community engagement at CHEO. “They were all the cast members, but for public appearances outside the show … they’re not allowed, outside the show, to be in their costumes.”

Charbonneau said the hospital was made aware of the situation “a few weeks” ago, but decided to move forward with it anyway.

Marvel Entertainment could not be reached for comment.
