A runaway car that was rolling down a slope toward a busy intersection was stopped by Gatineau police who bumped it with their police cruiser.
Gatineau police said officers spotted the car without a driver on Carillon Street in Hull at about 9:50 a.m. on Friday. According to police, the unoccupied Volkswagen was gaining speed as it rolled down Carillon toward the busier Boulevard des Allumettières.
The officers believed a collision would be inevitable, so they raced toward the Volkswagen, and were able to deflect it and immobilize it using their police cruiser just before it entered the intersection.
To prevent similar near misses, Gatineau police are reminding drivers to be sure to apply the emergency brake and turn the wheels toward the curb when they park their vehicles on a slope.
