Many passengers were surprised to find airport taxis honking and circling past the arrivals level doors on Tuesday rather than lining up in their usual pickup lane.

Until the Ottawa Airport Authority jumped in with free shuttle buses to downtown, passengers at the Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport’s arrivals section looked about as confused as if it were snowing outside on a late summer day.

Taxi drivers weren’t picking up passengers at the Ottawa Airport, instead driving their cars around in a slow lineup past the arrivals terminal while honking their horns to protest a new contract deal between the airport and the Coventry Connections cab company that requires the drivers to pay more per trip for fares from the airport.

“I didn’t know anything was going on until I saw people walking around with signs,” said passenger Darcy Miller, who came in from Halifax with her baby. “Luckily I have my husband coming to pick me up, but I’d imagine it would be difficult to try to cab today.”

Passenger Gelu Eicla seemed quite distressed when he found out him and his family couldn’t take a cab home after returning from a three-week trip abroad.

“I don’t know what we’re going to do now,” Eicla said. “I was hoping to get a taxi. We’re coming from Germany and we’re trying to get home. We’ve been away for three weeks and came home to this. We wanted to take a cab, so what are we supposed to do now, walk?”

Seconds later, a passing motorist offered him and his family a ride home.

The airport was relatively quiet in the early afternoon, and many incoming passengers were expecting to be picked up by relatives or friends.

“I’m just waiting for someone to pick me,” said Angela Quaeb of Ottawa, who was returning from the United States. “I have no idea what’s going on. I just sort of walked out to this madness. I’ve been told it’s because of the taxi strike or something like that. I’ve never seen anything like this.”

Another passenger waiting to be picked up said she was surprised.

“It’s a lot of noise, I’ve never seen this before at the Ottawa airport,” Patricia Rasiaie said. “I don’t really know what’s going on, but I think this could be a problem for incoming people and tourists trying to catch a cab. Big time. Thank God my brother-in-law is picking me up.”

As arrivals grew busier, the airport authority organized a free shuttle service. Large buses were sent downtown, while smaller shuttle buses were available to people travelling to the east or west end.

The airport later issued an advisory cautioning passengers that the taxi dispute was causing delays and asking them to “consider alternate arrangements and plan extra time.”
