Catherine McKenna is prepared to take a dive for the party.
The Liberal candidate in Ottawa Centre plans to be among the 100 or so long-distance swimmers to take part in the Ottawa Riverkeeper’s four-kilometre open water interprovincial swim on Saturday.
“The focus of the swim is to highlight the need for collaboration and action on both sides of the Ottawa River because water quality is a shared responsibility,” McKenna, a long-time competitive swimmer, said Thursday in announcing her intentions.
“The Ottawa River is a crown jewel in the National Capital Region’s natural landscape,” she added. “I’m excited to lend my support and muscles to help preserve the river’s biodiversity, enhance the quality of water and maximize opportunities for residents in Ottawa Centre and beyond to swim, fish, paddle and enjoy other recreational activities in its waters.”
McKenna took part in last year’s inaugural event. A highlights video of that swim is available here.
This year’s swim begins at Lac Deschenes Sailing Club, 10 Rangeview Ave., in Ottawa, at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
