Provincial police in Renfrew were called out twice to the town’s Wal-Mart on Monday to assist dogs that had been left unattended in cars the intense heat.

The first call was late Monday afternoon, where witnesses spotted a dog in distress. SPCA and OPP responded to the scene and the owners were warned they could be charged with cruelty to an animal.

An hour later, police were called to the same parking lot for a similar call but the suspect vehicle had left. Witnesses took the license number and police say they will follow up.

Police remind pet owners never to leave an animal inside a locked car during a heatwave.
