The rookie Liberal MPP for Ottawa-Orléans, Marie-France Lalonde, is the government’s new chief whip, she announced Friday.
“I am honored and humbled to become the new Chief Government Whip. It is a great privilege to be appointed by Premier Kathleen Wynne to this new position and I look forward to my new role as I help our team work for the people of Ontario and deliver on critical issues such as transportation infrastructure renewals and upgrades,” remarked MPP Lalonde.
The chief whip makes sure the party’s caucus is ready to do what the premier wants and shows up for votes and so on. It’s not as delicate a job when the government has a majority as when it doesn’t, but a screwup in that situation is all the more embarrassing. The whip’s also responsible for monitoring the caucus for dissent and letting the boss know if there’s trouble ahead.
Lalonde billed it as an opportunity to serve her constituents even better, though that’s a bit of a stretch. It is a sign of Wynne’s confidence in her, though the job doesn’t come with any particular power. Lalonde is also keeping her jobs as parliamentary assistant to the economic-development minister (Brad Duguid) and the francophone-affairs minister (Madeleine Meilleur).
There are some odd elements here, which I’ve inquired about.
For one thing, although the whip isn’t quite a cabinet minister, it’d be more normal for the premier to announce the appointment. Kathleen Wynne is on a northern tour just now, visiting Red Lake in northwestern Ontario.
Also, somebody’s had the job until now: Mississauga MPP Bob Delaney. I have no indication yet whether he gave up being whip or had the post taken away from him. Or whether Lalonde jumped the gun on some larger announcement of a cabinet shuffle — which would be an odd thing for the premier to do from Red Lake on the Friday before a long weekend, to be sure.
Anyway, more to come.
