A Highway 17 crime spree Sunday ended with a man in custody, Ontario Provincial Police reported.

The events began with the theft of a front-end loader in Deep River, northwest of Ottawa, that was later discovered abandoned in a ditch on the highway. While officers were at that scene, they were told that a man had a man had stolen “a quantity of alcohol” and a black Toyota Tacoma pickup truck in nearby Stonecliffe.

Police then spotted the Tacoma driving east on Highway 17 through Deep River and activated their emergency lights and siren in an effort to halt the truck. “The driver failed to stop and police did not continue to follow the vehicle for public safety reasons,” police said.

A short time later, however, the truck was spotted “driving erratically” at the Canadian Nuclear Laboratories in Chalk River and then crashing into trees in a residential area. The driver fled on foot and was tracked by a police dog and the OPP emergency response team to Corry Lake Road in Chalk River, where he was arrested.

Jonathan Robert Larocque of Temagami, Ont., faces charges including theft, flight from police, possession of marijuana and failure to comply with a probation order. He was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
