The Ottawa Hospital Foundation is cancelling its signature fundraising event because of expected inclement weather on Sunday.

Known as The Ride, the annual event raises thousands of dollars each year.

The event has been dogged by difficulty recently. Last year a participant was killed in an accident causing a new routes and a name change. It was called Ride the Rideau.

The event includes a 50-kilometre closed route, meant for more casual cyclists, and a 108-kilometre open route intended for more experienced riders.

The revamp of the event was prompted by the September death of cyclist Laurie Strano, 40, who died after colliding with a garbage truck in Manotick. Ottawa police announced in March that no charges would be laid against the driver of the truck.

The Ottawa Hospital Foundation said in a media release that it consults a meteorological service specializing in outdoor events along with Environment Canada. Both are predicting thunderstorms which the foundation says would make conditions unsafe for participants and volunteers.

The Foundation is asking all registered participants to drop off their pledges at The Ottawa Hospital Foundation, 737 Parkdale Ave., 1st Floor in the Kaminski Room at the Civic Campus Sunday between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. or contact The Ottawa Hospital Foundation to make alternate arrangements.

The Ottawa Hospital Foundation says it will release the official fundraising total Sunday.

In the past five years, the Ride has raised more than $8.8 million in support of cancer research at The Ottawa Hospital. For more information see DoTheRide.ca.
