Suspended Sen. Patrick Brazeau has his eye on a return to the Senate after four criminal charges against him were dropped Tuesday.

Brazeau changed his plea to guilty on two charges: assaulting a former girlfriend in 2013 and simple possession of cocaine.

At the same time, the prosecution dropped four others: sexual assault against the ex-girlfriend and assault against two other people in 2014, as well as uttering a death threat.

He still faces one criminal charge of bring in control of a vehicle while drunk.

Crown and defence lawyers have jointly asked for an unconditional discharge which would mean no criminal record. The judge will think about that until late October and warned Brazeau he isn’t bound to do what the lawyers asked.

Outside the court, an emotional Brazeau spoke about his love of his family and the hard time he has faced since charges were laid.

He was under suspicion for two-and-a-half years, he said, “and now it’s over.”

He called the sexual assault charge “the worst.”

The trial began in March.

The sudden conclusion means a video of the police interview with Brazeau will never be seen publicly. It was part of the prosecution case. As well, he won’t have to testify and face cross-examination.

Defence lawyer Gérard Larocque said his client hopes to return to the Senate. His trial on Senate expense fraud allegations is set for next spring.

More to come.
