Former NHLers Ron Ellis and Zenon Konopka, a onetime Ottawa Senators and Ottawa 67s player, will be on hand Wednesday night for a concussion information session at the Lone Star restaurant in Gloucester.

The event, organized by the non-profit group StopConcussions Foundation, will also feature Dr. Michael Goulet, medical director of the Concussion Clinic at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario.

The event is part of the foundation’s grassroots campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of concussions and neurotrauma in sports, said organizer Kerry Goulet. The foundation chose the informal setting as a good way to reach out to athletes and coaches, he said.

The information evening comes as the Ontario government is studying a bill — Rowan’s Law — that would step up concussion safety protocols for high school athletes. It’s named for Rowan Stringer, a 17-year-old John McRae Secondary School student who died in May 2013 after suffering several concussions while playing high school rugby.

The event runs from Wednesday, Sept. 23 from 6-8:30 p.m. at the Lone Star, 1211 Lemieux St.
