For the first time in Canada — or at least since the government starting charting demographic trends — there are more seniors alive than children.
Or, as the now-majority of Canadians — not to mention the ones with most of the good jobs and nearly all the good cottages would say — let’s not get too hasty.
We’ve known for a long time — since the returning Second World War service people and their partners got “busy,” in fact — that this geezer bulge was coming.
And as Statistics Canada notes in its annual demographic estimates, released Tuesday, Canada still has one of the lowest proportions of people aged 65 and older among G7 nations.
Some other nuggets from the Stats Can report:
• On July 1, 2015, one Canadian in two was at least 40.5 years of age.
• The median age of Canada’s population has risen by 5.7 years in the past two decades.
• The median age in 2015 is higher for women (41.4 years) than for men (39.6 years).
• New Brunswick has the largest proportion (19 per cent) of people aged 65 and older, while Nunavut (3.7 per cent) had the lowest.
