Carleton University’s student association has apologized and removed a profanity-filled YouTube video urging post-secondary students to vote in the Oct. 19 federal election after it received angry backlash online.
Carleton University Students’ Association (CUSA) said in a statement its video “I’m Gunna Vote,” a parody of the popular Lonely Island song “I’m On A Boat,” was “fun, engaging, artistic, and edgy and targeted at a demographic that has a history of not participating in the democratic process.
“That being said, we recognize that for many the video is perceived negatively,” reads the statement. “For all those offended and to those in our community who feel the video does not effectively represent Carleton University, we sincerely apologize.”
The nearly two-minute long video, which was removed by Saturday morning, contains what looks to be around a dozen students dancing to a cuss-filled, electro-hip-hop soundtrack at Carleton’s campus, rapping about the importance of democracy and encouraging viewers to participate in the upcoming federal election.
“You can’t stop me, motherf—ker, cause I’m gunna vote,” one raps.
“Take a picture trick, I’m gunna vote, b—tch,” another singer notes.
The video quickly picked up steam after its release this week, with Vice News calling it the “most embarrassing music video in Canadian history,” and many on social media berating its aggressive use of profanity.
The association said that if the non-partisan video, which garnered more than 45,000 views, caused at least some viewers to consider voting, “we have accomplished part of our goal. The feedback we’ve received suggests exactly that.”
