The provincial Ministry of the Environment continues to investigate a strange chemical spill in the city’s East end.

The spill, which occurred Tuesday at around 3:20 p.m., involved two large spills of a “petroleum based product,” one on Cyrville Road and another along Star Top Road, forcing HAZMAT crews to respond to contain the toxic material.

According to firefighters, the spills were contained after several hours and the liquid was tracked in an attempt to determine where and how it originated.

The environment ministry investigators were called in to assist and determine exactly what substance the petroleum based chemical is and whether it poses any further danger.

In the meantime, the spills have been cleaned up and traffic has resumed on area streets.

More to come.
